Joep is a Dutch visual artist renowned for exploring themes of banality and seduction in his work, which is characterized as postmodern and camp. Following his studies at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam, he gained recognition for his watercolours and photographs. His art has been showcased in various esteemed locations, including the Groninger Museum in Groningen, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, and the Municipal Museum in Amsterdam. Joep is acclaimed for infusing kitsch into 'Art with a capital A', aligning his creations with the postmodernism movement, akin to Andy Warhol's works. His art bears resemblance to pop art as it elevates elements from 'lower' art forms to 'higher' art, categorizing it within Neo Popart. In Joep's unique case, his style is referred to as überkitsch: a form of kitsch so amplified that it attains significant artistic value. An example of his early work is the watercolour 'Aglaé deeply loved'.
