Persephone 

Persephone was the daughter of chief god Zeus and goddess Demeter. The gods Hermes and Apollo had wooed the girl, but Demeter rejected their gifts and hid her daughter far away from the Olympian gods. Hades, god of the underworld, was in love with Persephone too. He asked Zeus for his approval to carry the girl off to his realm. Zeus agreed. Persephone was picking flowers when Hades came to abduct her, bursting through a cleft in the earth.

Demeter searched all over the earth for her daughter, until Helios, the sun which sees everything, told her what had happened. Finally, Zeus forced Hades to return Persephone to the upper world. Hades complied with the request, but he tricked her by giving her some pomegranate seeds to eat. Because Persephone had tasted food in the underworld, she had to spend a third part of each year (the winter months) in the abode of the death…
