Leis
In Crete, a sacrifice was made to the goddess of spring Persephone every year. The islanders prayed for a bountiful harvest. The most beautiful girl on the island was chosen by a jury of priests. This year it was the turn of Leis, a poor farmer's daughter. She was led to the temple of the god of death Thanatos. There she begged the clergy for mercy, after which she was immediately killed.
