Atalanta

Atalanta was born in Arcadia. When she was six years old she wanted to become a runner. Her father took the best coach of Greece in service: Hippomenes. No one could run faster than he. Hippomenes promised Atalanta a golden apple if she would become the fastest runner in Greece.

When she was twelve Atalanta defeated all the youngsters of Greece. She placed victory upon victory. When she was eighteen she even wanted to defeat her coach.

Hippomenes accepted the challenge. Halfway through the race Atalanta was in front of him. He tricked her: he threw the golden apple right before her feet. While she picked it up he overtook her and won. So Atalanta lost the match and the apple...
