Antigone
Antigone had two brothers: Eteocles and Polynices. The brothers shared the rule over Thebes jointly until they quarrelled, and Eteocles expelled his brother. Polynices left the kingdom, gathered an army, and attacked the city of Thebes. Both brothers were killed in the battle.
Creon, who ascended to the throne, decreed that Polynices should not be buried or even mourned, on pain of death. His corpse was destined for the vultures. Antigone defied the order. She secretly buried her beloved brother, but was caught. She was brought before Creon and stated that she knew his law but chose to break it. She was locked in a tomb.
The next day Creon had a change of heart and headed to the tomb to release Antigone. Only to see that she had hanged herself…
